Okay. I can do this. There's nothing to it... right?

[It was an intimate scene on the communicator of a girl wearing a too-large tunic she stole from her boyfriends closet standing in front of a mirror. The buns you would normally find on Mai's head were gone and instead, a long curtain of dangerously straight black hair was flowing far past her waist. She was trying to pull it all up but for a girl who had always had servants to do her hair, this was far too difficult. Every attempt led to failure and the girl was getting impatient.

She knew better than to try some buns so instead, she tried a ponytail but that didn't really work well. There was too much hair for her inexperienced hands. Next, she figured she'd do something with some of her needles. She was good at those, wouldn't that work?]

This is not supposed to be difficult. [She ran another attempt but it fell into a cascade of black. The needle she had been trying to use for her hair went flying through the air and sticking to the wall. Mai was furious.]

That's it. I give up. You win. Stay loose for all I care.

[But she really wanted her hair up. Her culture!]

It took two servants to do my hair back home. I don't know why I bother. Glad you liked them.

[THE COMMUNICATORS DON'T HAVE MINDS OF THEIR OWN-- well, actually. After that body-swapping mishap, he's not so sure anymore. And he's still smirking.]

I don't know why either. [Shrug!] I'd just cut it all off. If it's too much to manage by yourself, it's not very practical.

We should be able to figure out, sort of like a physics problem. [Wut. Of course, it's true: figuring out a way to suspend the weight of the hair into the buns and hold it in position with enough to keep it tight, using only the pins.]

[Zuko enters, but stops short when he sees Mai. In all the years he's known her, he's never seen her with her hair loose before, she's always so careful to keep it bound up. It's almost like looking at a different person.

...It... takes him a moment to remember she'd asked him a question.]

What's the problem with leaving it like that? You look beautiful, Mai.

[Mai certainly wasn't the type to take just anything lightly but the way he looked at her really made those sappy words coming out of his mouth hit right at home plate. She turned her head downward, fingers taking a lock of her hair and playing with it lightly.]

You know why I always had it up. The same reason why you never saw my hair loose like this.

[It was class status and their culture, Zuko. She wasn't used to exposing her hair like this. It truly was a pride and joy.]
