[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

Minako-chan! I'll be embarrassed. I wouldn't know what to do!

That's where I would come in silly. I would help you.

I don't know if there's a cure for not knowing what to do. [She says it as a joke, but it's also true; the second she starts to consider feelings like that, she feels hopeless stupid and awkward.]

That's why you have a fairy godmother, me! I would help you in anyway possible.

I wouldn't even know what to talk about on a date, or how to be good company for a boy.

[All the sighing.]

I should make you a list for you to study.

[Ami does not seem to even get the fact that may be a joke.]

That could be helpful.

[It is a joke, for now...and partly true if there ever is someone...because seriously Ami you need a list.]

I thought that might work. But, right now I don't think you need it just yet.

That's right. I have other things to do. I have studying.

[There's something slightly flat about the tone, but the words...]

So you go to school still?

[She tilts her head slightly. She's thinks something might be off, but she's not exactly sure.]

I study on my own, though here, it won't help me. There still isn't a hospital I'd be able to work at.

Then why don't you study when the time is right. If your not going to school, then there's no reason to study.

I think I'd rather just study.

Why? I mean if you're not going to school, couldn't you try something new and exciting.

New and exciting doesn't really suit me, don't you think so?

No, but also being in the same routine can be pretty boring.

[well, she knew she wasn't exactly exciting.]

A boring routine. Do you think that's what I've become? [There's a trace of wistfulness to the voice.]

[Here's where the worry slightly sets in.]

No, your a pretty interesting person, but you prefer to hide behind a book, that's all.

[She sighs slightly.]

I apologise if I offended you in anyway,but are you okay?

I'm fine. Maybe just a little tired. [Actually, she strongly resembles the height of working herself to exhaustion during exam season... and it certainly isn't exam season here.]

Then maybe you should rest for now.

You're right. I'll get some sleep.

Right and hopefully you'll feel better when you wake up.

Then goodnight. [With little further delay, she starts to leave the room.]
