[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

[She smiled.]

That's nice, but I want to keep my mom's memory, that's why I would never sing that type of music myself. Plus, my voice is more for a different type altogether anyway.

It's fine to make your own way and progress, too, isn't it? I might not have the same specialization as my mother, either.

Right, though times maybe hard, but if you work hard enough and make people believe, then you can do anything.

[She pulls back.]

I might not have the sort of ability to make people believe.

Hey, I get it. It is a very hard thing to make people do, but in the end it's worth it.

[She's never been the best at believing in herself, much less making others believe in something - or at least, that's the fear in the back of her mind that's rapidly coming to the front these past few days.]

It takes a special person to be able to reach someone that way. Someone like Usagi-chan.

I don't know who this Usagi-chan is, but everyone can reach out to someone, even if it's in a different way than to another.

She's someone I knew back home. She was here for awhile.

[Maybe even Usagi can't reach people the way Ami had always believed, if she could be lost to the darkness again.]

[She sat there quietly for a moment before smiling.]

Well, if she was able to reach out for people, that's a good thing that you can do to.

I don't have her abilities.

It's not an ability.

Being able to be friends with everyone is a special talent.

Yeah, if one can actually do that. But, honestly, it's impossible to be friends with everyone.

Maybe so. She isn't here anymore. If she was like that, shouldn't she have been able to stay out of the darkness?

[She sighs slightly.]

There are plenty of people who might be like that and are still in the darkness. We've all been in there at some point apparently. Since we've had to go into the darkness in order to come out.

Yes. But some of us belong there more than others.

I agree with you there.

[Icy is the perfect example of this.]

Maybe... It's not so bad to belong there after all.

[This is not the girl who was utterly horrified to learn just how deeply she'd sunk into the darkness of another world.]

It seems pointless to keep fighting it, doesn't it?

I don't think so. You can say it if you want, that's your own choice and I accept that, but you are saying stuff and not actually doing anything about it. I don't get that at all.

Don't presume to know me. [That is definitely colder than Ami's normal kindness.] Or to know what I've done.

Didn't say I did.

[An incredulous look; Musa had just accused her of saying these things without doing anything about it. She isn't deaf.]

As you wish, then. Have a good day. [She has no wish to subject herself to that sting further and, right now, little of her normal politeness to mediate it.]
