[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

I don't know, while it seems like a lot of people want it done sooner, the less likely it is to happen.

It may even not happen at all.

From what I've heard a world has come out of the darkness, correct? If that is the case then it's going to happen, it just takes time.

We may not have that time. The Darkness isn't sitting and waiting for us.

But aren't there people fighting at as we speak?

People are all doing there parts to ensure that the Darkness doesn't go further. I'm not saying it's waiting, but I'm also not saying it's going to take everything.

At the rate it spreads, it might be futile to think otherwise.

[She sighs, this just reminds her of the shadows, they play off the most insecure part of a person and show it off towards the world, that's what the darkness reminds her off.]

The reason is spreads is because people let it. It's like something I learnt, the more you reject something, the stronger something will get.

It's like saying 'don't think about a pink elephant'. The first thing in your mind is likely to be exactly that.

So, thinking about your flaws is something one automatically does. But by rejecting them, the darkness has a easier grasp.

The darkness keeps growing, despite whatever we've done so far.

Because people accept it as an inevitability.

Or do they accept it because it's inevitable after all?

I believe more in the logical side of things. Darkness just like the darkness we know, is like the bad part of yourself you hate.

[Oh, she knows the darkness. She's fought it for years in her world - centuries, if one considers her past.]

Yes, but it's growing and taking a form here that can't be allowed.

Which is why there are people who work to try and change that.

Can we really say those efforts have made enough progress?

I can't exactly answer that for myself, as I haven't been here for as long as someone like you has.

I haven't been here as long as some, but it's long enough to have seen that we've barely made progress. Another world came from the darkness, but it hasn't given us clues to continue that work.

There won't be help from the light or the darkness. We can only help ourselves.

I can understand that clearly. if someone seems wrong, one would go about solving the problem yourself.

[Even though the heartless may be affecting her, that core of searching and seeking out the truth and knowledge hasn't changed. Ami nods.]
