[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

But, if we start to think that now, then I know that my family might never come back.

[She's used that as her own argument before, but right now, it feels outside her grasp.]

This won't bring our loved ones back, either.

What won't?

Just thinking they could be. That isn't enough.

I know, but I can't do much to bring them back.

Maybe neither can I. Even after this time, I haven't made much progress. Thinking I could might have been only fooling myself.

You can never really be sure until you've been here for a long time, right?

We never know when people will leave. [She's being repetitive, but it's weighing down her mind; the heartless activity is only making it worse, not creating it.]

I worry about that as well, but that's why I work hard.

What if that hard work isn't enough?

I don't know, so far it works pretty well.

It hasn't brought my friends who are missing. It hasn't stopped more people from being lost.

But, you can't protect everyone. You can only protect those you love most.

[Thus why she said it worked for her so far. She is friendly with everyone and sure it hurts then they disappear, but as long as Ciel is still around she's happy.]

I wasn't even able to do that much. Usagi-chan was lost to the darkness again.

She's come back thought right, because you'll be there to help her?

[She really does try to be positive but sometimes it slips.]

Who knows. I'd like to think so but it seems less and less likely.

What if I don't think it anymore? [With some of her friends returning, the truth is she's gained a lot of hope that the others could, too. But right now, that's slipped right through her fingers somehow.]

Why wouldn't you?

It's been proven wrong, time after time. It's a hypothesis that's broken down.

[She's just going to tilt her head slightly and stare.]
