[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

In the darkness. Only a handful of people have been saved here. It isn't enough.

Well, it isn't enough, but they will evetually find there way through.

[She has one word to poke a hole in that theory.]

How did you manage to get through?

[It's a good question. How do people get through it. She knows she can because well...it doesn't effect her at all, but she wonders about others and how it affects them.]

Yes; what coping mechanisms work? I want to know.

[She sighed, she asked the question of how the girl before her managed to get though the darkness and to Traverse Town, but apparently that was something she wasn't going to answer. Lets try this as best as one girl can do.]

I didn't mention anything about coping mechanisms.

Isn't that all this is? Everything we tell ourselves about working for these worlds or hoping to save ours. It's just to comfort ourselves.

I don't believe so. I mean my world came back, so hope is something that will eventually gain from it.

It may sounds stupid and I can understand that, but hard work doesn't make things happen instantly. It's going to be a long process and without hope or light, then obviously you'll get nowhere. So, I believe the more negative a person starts to think, then less likely it is that something will happen.

[She understands perfectly - normally. But right now is anything but perfectly normal.]

'Thinking positively' hasn't made any progress either.

As I said it would take time.

Maybe. Or maybe another new way is needed.
