[One dark brown eye fills the screen. There are flecks of honey in that brown eye.]

I don't see anyone in there.

[She pulls the communicator away, brushing back a lock of her always difficult dirty-blonde hair. She's had a hard life and she's somewhere in her 30s.]

Well, that little white beast said that there were people I could talk to on this thing. And that my world was destroyed by the darkness. So how did I get here, huh? Why wasn't a wizard like Schmendrick spared? Or the Unicorn? They're both more powerful than I am and the Unicorn can fight the dark.

[More softly.] What's the point of being a wizard if you end up being the one needing to be saved? Damn that man. [Despite her angry words and tone, she's worried about him. He has become so dear to her.] And damn these demons for doing this.

It's a pleasure. [He bows his head politely.] Has anyone explained this place to you yet?

Somewhat. My world's gone, we're all stuck here- [She tries to not laugh at that. 'Stuck', to her, implies less space than several worlds.] -and there are worlds we can go to that have been freed.

That is the jist of it. And you know about the heartless?

A bit. Those're the little black demon creatures.

[He nods.] Those are the basics. I'll get out of your hair now, but if you ever have any questions, I've been here for some time. I can do my best to answer.

[She nods and is about to let him disconnect.]

How long?

[He consciously keeps any emotion out of his voice when he answers; he's been here far too long.]

Around eight months.

It's all right. I can't complain overmuch. I've made many wonderful friends, here. Everyone looks out for one another. [Well... not everyone. Just most of them.] I look on the bright side: there are many new places to explore and things to see. Not everyone gets that opportunity.

Mm, I certainly never would have gone to another world. I hadn't even thought there were other worlds that... had people on them.
