003 [Video / Household Action] Cooking Trial and Error

[sanguineheels]

[Lenalee appears on the feed, her nose and one cheek spattered with a haphazard splotch of what looks like flour. Behind her, the kitchen looks as if it's been under heavy use, but not a disaster zone. Several pots are boiling away on the stove, a cutting board is covered in flour while several small plastic bins are stacked on one another, full of whatever it is she's just finished making.]

This might be a strange question, but has anyone ever made soba noodles from scratch before? [She was sure she knew of several people she'd met through the communicator that had mentioned being from Japan. It WAS a Japanese dish, right?]

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but it doesn't seem to be coming out right. [She lifts a curled finger to her chin, eyes darting off in a direction in thought.] It could be the tsuyu that I'm getting wrong... but that doesn't explain why some of the noodles are sticking together sometimes.

[after a moment of thought she smiles and shrugs her shoulders.] But, if anyone would like to taste test for me, I would appreciate it.

Hmm.. They're a little different. The kind of flour used to make them comes from Japanese buckwheat. I've never had them before, but they're Kanda's favorite food.

I figured that smelled familiar.

[She nearly jumps out of her skin. JEEZ KANDA.]

Oh! Kanda! I didn't hear you come in... [she smiles a bit glancing over to the cooking food.] I wanted it to be a surprise, but I'm not sure if I've made it right at all.

I can help you with that! I might have trouble with magic but I am pretty good at cooking. Maybe because I always have to cook for my sister. She is terrible at it!

I'd love the help. I'm still learning, but it's one of my hobbies. Do you do a lot of things for your sister?

I'm not familiar with the dish, so I don't know what it ought to taste or look like, but I am a pretty good judge of taste in general. [He grins.] I'm always up for taste tests.

That's okay! I have plenty to share, and I would love to hear more opinions. [Maybe they didn't turn out as bad as she's been worried about.]

[Even while this is directed at Lenalee, Rei is staring at all the materials all over the kitchen. Somebody's been very busy trying to make this dish.]

[A quick glance at the initial message cleared her question up right away]

That would be great, Rei. I would really appreciate it. [she blinks though, glancing behind her, before looking back with a sheepish grin.]

It's a bit of a mess, I probably should have cleaned a bit before asking.

If you have not prepared them before it can be a difficult task. Have you tried coating them in oil? I would recommend a sesame oil.

Hmm.. oil? I didn't think of that. Wouldn't that effect the taste? [She smiles though, quite happy to have advice.]

It's a noodle dish made from buckwheat flour. Usually it's served cold, I think.

Soba? ( alas, she's never heard of it. ) I would, but I'm afraid I'm not entirely certain what they should taste like in the first place.

[It's not that surprising to her that so many people haven't heard of the food before.]

That's alright. It doesn't seem like many people know what it is. I'm not even sure how popular it would be in Japan, to be honest.

It took me some time to be able to cook something right so don't take it to heart. Practice makes perfect!
