05 State of the Union ♛ Party Aftermath ♛ [Video on Destiny Island]
Now that amateur-hour is out of the way… [Massie rolled her eyes at her reference to Renge] .. It’s time for someone with more credibility to weigh in on the ensembles everyone was wearing at Usagi’s party.
[With a half smile, Massie allowed the camera to pan back revealing her “studio”. Bean, her little black pug, was situated on top of a silk pillow, sporting a jeweled collar. Massie had commandeered one of the unused rooms in the school and the decorations from the drama department. She’d done everything she could to make it look sheik and inviting on a veryyy limited budget]
Let’s start with the passable outfits and save the best and the worst for last.
PASSABLE
Allen, Hotaru, Kairi, Musa, Sae, Usagi, Renge, Ciel, Makoto, Ami
Allen, I nearly placed him in the worst category. His outfit looked a too reminiscent of something you would see in an old western/cowboy movie. The only thing that saved him was the lack of a cowboy hat and the outfit did suit his more boy-ish features.
Another participant that was in danger of dipping into the fashion don’ts was Hotaru Tomoe. Her dress, while age appropriate, was bunchy and unbecoming. Metallic fabrics run a high risk of looking chincy. Her striking eyes managed to mask some of this fashion faux pas.
Ugh, I made a terrible error when I last spoke to Kairi. While she did pick something simple and elegant, I neglected to mention that she needed a pop of color. The light color did nothing but help her fade into the background like a total wallflower. She did pick an excellent shape and cut of her dress but that's it.
As for Musa’s dress I wasn’t even sure where to start…. The wrap, the top, and the bottom look nice but not together. Her dress is like someone took a variety of spare parts and sewed them together haphazardly like Frankenstein’s monster. [Okay.. Maybe that was a little harsh] That being said… all it needed to save it was something to tie the top more strongly to the bottom. The designer did make the attempt by continuing the floral pattern skyward but it wasn’t enough. I’d settle for even a choker made out of the skirts fabric, that would have brought the whole outfit together as one cohesive statement.
Sae’s dress I actually thought placed much lower than it should have. The jeweled accents are stunning and not too gaudy. It’s just the right amount of shimmer and flow. The problem being the American flag motif achieved by the girl’s red hair. Red, white, and blue? Really? The dress was Ah-dorable but it was the wrong color for a red head.
Oh, don’t get me started on the guest of honor’s dress. Birthday girl or not, who put her into that dress? Yes, I do considerate it one of the passable ensembles but it looked FAR.. FAR too much like a wedding dress. The color whispered “walk down the aisle” not “it’s my party”.. Usagi’s dress really needed to make her the center of attention but it fell flat and hard.
Renge I’ll give credit for trying for a different length and style but.. It came off looking like she showed up in a night gown. It was too short AND too deep in the neckline.
Jumping on the outdated train, is Ciel Phantomhive. His clothes looked like they came out of the distant past. His only saving grace was how confidently he carried himself. Though…. If I might make a suggestion.. You might try nawt to look so much like a doll at the next function.
As for Makoto Kino, there isn’t much to say about her combination. The dress and her hair kept to Earth tones which although dull are complementary. There were no surprises with this ensemble. The way the dress pooled together at the bottom was appealing to the eye.
Kudos to Ami Mizuno for being one of the few bold enough to show up in a shorter dress. The drawback being that it comes off being more casual than formal. The color was excellent for a party, and the pattern at the top gives the eye something to feast on. If I have any complaints it is that it was too casual and too matchy matchy. Blue eyes, blue-ish hair, blue eyes? It needed something to break the monotony.
So who put their best foot forward? We’re about to find out.
[She gave Bean a light ruffle of the fur]
EXQUISITE
These people deserve the credit due to them. The few, the fashionable, the fab. I give you Chloe, Elizabeth, Kanda, Minako, Rima, Fai, Yuuki, Joruk, Tidus, Kaname, Massie, Aidou
To start off.. how could anyone go wrong with the suit Chloe appeared in? it was sleek, it was elegant, and it had just enough color to keep it from becoming “just another suit”. That sharp pop of color was just was the fashionista ordered.
My next selection greatly surprised me. Elizabeth Middleford appeared in a stunning ball gown. I had thought she would look too much like a cake topper but the diagonal layering of the design, the beading and the addition of the jacket actually won me over. She chose an excellent regal purple color on top of it all. It’s not everyone who can pull off a full ball gown but she did it.
Yu Kanda, the great unsung hero of the fashion world arrived to the party looking sharp in his exquisite suit. I wonder if he actually picked it out for himself or had help because it was simply ah-mazing to behold. The gold accents were understated and complimented the outfit rather than detracting from it and the flower completed the look.
If there was any dress that should have had the opportunity to be voted it was the one Minako Aino appeared in. Her dress possessed such a light, airy feel, while simultaneously catching the viewer’s attention. In a dress like that the wearer appears to glide rather than walk. It was truly eye-catching and worthy of more attention.
Rima’s ensemble was the only dressed that attempted and accomplished an edgier feel to it. It wasn’t simply a ball gown but it was a ball gown seeping in style. Since so few attendees delved into the darker hues save for the guys, Rima could take center stage. Not quite a “little black dress” and definitely not “ordinary ball gown” but it took elements from both and excelled above those categories. She was also one of the only attendees I saw wearing a smart and flirty looking choker or gloves for a dash of class.
The only reason Fai failed to hit the charts, I’m guessing, is due to his unassuming air. His suit was the right length and cut for his physique. Usually I’m not a fan of tails myself but in this case they worked, accentuating his height and drawing some attention away from his long legs.
Ugh, and this is where someone-who-shall-not-be-named really exhibited her lack of fashion knowledge. How could anyone nominate a Valentino for the WORST list? Puh-lease. It’s a Valentino. If you don’t know which dress I’m talking about it was the one worn by Yuuki Kuran. You could argue that it’s more fit for the runway than a birthday party but there’s no denying that it’s high fashion, and no one else was wearing anything remotely comparable to it.
Joruk arrived in style and was yet another attendee I believe was woefully overlooked. He didn’t shy away from mixing various hues and even adding that red accent. The metamorphosis between his usual attire and what he displayed at the party secures his place on the Fashion Do’s list.
Considering this guy’s usual attire I believe Tidus stunned most of us in what he selected. That suit was flawless, save for how unusual it was to see Tidus in it. That aside I have to say that I was genuinely impressed. I didn’t think he had it in him to pick something like this. The layers gave the eye plenty to see while not looking too heavy or cumbersome. The lack of a tie seemed more fitting for a party setting while the suit itself played into the formal theme. This was an ah-mazing and pleasant surprise.
One of the only guys to deviate from the more expected suit selections was Kaname Kuran. The outfit threatened to dive into the “too casual to be classy” category but he managed to pull it off. The ruffles made it less casual and more red carpet. Had they been too large it could have easily ruined the look. The color choice also gave his eyes a chance to draw all of the attention and with this attendee that is a very good thing.
Need I even mention my own dress? It was a perfect ten, and the only dress to get more playful with the straps and the top portion. As you can see the design is slimming and ideal for my body type. Nothing less would due. Combine the perfect color, with the perfect accent and makeup and there’s no beating it.
Aidou also opted to attend in a becoming suit with a boutonnière. He kept it simple and traditional but with a few accessories to clinch the overall style. His rich azure eyes and hairstyle sweetened the entire collection.
Aren’t you curious who is lingering at the bottom of the list? The worst of the worst, the most disappointing of the whole night? Wait no longer!
Terrible
Lenalee, Naoto, Oz, Terra, Undertaker, Hermes, Naru, Washu, Hermoine, Cheza, Eagle, Ventus, Dante, Saleh
Lenalee, no, just no. This dress is so wrong on so many levels I can’t even fathom what ever possessed you to leave your residence with it on. When I spoke about cheap looking dresses in metallic fabrics THIS is the type of dress I meant. This dress is the poster child for fashion no nos. The style is wrong, the shape is wrong, the fabric is wrong. This is by far one of the worst dresses.
Did Naoto even bother to dress up for the occasion? Security guard or not it’s no excuse to show up wearing your everyday clothes. Parties are a chance to break out of your routine and try something new and here Naoto was just lacking and incredibly boring.
I could have given Oz a pass. I could have if I could only see the top of his outfit the whole evening. Those boy shorts, and the bow ruined it for me. No person, man, nor child should wear shorts to a formal function. Ever. Boy shorts are a definite no.
Rough, rugged and ridiculous this describes Terra’s style in a nutshell. It’s one thing to show up “semi-casual” it’s another to arrive in an outfit that makes it look like you just rolled out of bed. I didn’t find anything redeemable about this look. Not one solitary thing. It was the perfect example of what “frumpy” looks like.
It should come as no surprise that Undertaker also made my worst dressed list. His clothes looked more theatrical than serious. Why would anyone go to a party like that unless it were Halloween? So nawt ah-mazing.
I actually agreed with the worst dressed award from that other list. While Undertaker was theatrical, Hermes clothes were both theatrical and comical. What can you expect from someone that usually wears a toga anyway? He’s never been at the height of fashion and clearly suffers for it. It was just the most terrible fashion don’t.
Naru’s dress was just too plain, too boring, and not her color. It looked like it needed straps to balance the skirt and was sorely lacking them.
Oh Washu.. Where do I start? While I do admire taking a risk in what you decide to wear this was just wrong. It looked like someone had built the thing out of light-brites. If this was a sci fi convention and nawt a formal birthday party it would have fit right in but who even goes to those? It was loud, it was flashy and it was completely over the top in a bad way.
As overwhelming as the light show was Hermione's dress was the complete opposite. It was the most underwhelming dress at the party which is why I can’t even fathom how she secured so many votes. Clearly, it must be who you know.. Unless there is a “spell” just for stuffing the ballot box. [Massie might have been a little bitter about losing.. But she genuinely didn’t like the dress either] This thing was a dowdy pale-colored sack. It wasn’t one bit flattering.
Here’s another dress where I can find little to no redeeming qualities and Cheza was the one wearing it. The color was bland, the long sleeves were excessive. If nothing else, then at least the dress brought your attention more to the girl’s face and hair.. But there are better dresses that can both look impressive and accentuate your other features. This dress just tries to hide the person within it and that makes it the most forgettable.
And Finally, Ventus. I already stated this earlier but being a security guard doesn’t absolve you of your need to dress for success. What was with those khaki capris, and that hideous costume? Was it supposed to be armor? Even if it was it hardly looked as it could block much of anything and it seems like it could have been concealed in some manner. Ugh. Couldn't you have at least tried to make yourself presentable?
To summarize:
Passable Allen, Hotaru, Kairi, Musa, Sae, Usagi, Renge, Ciel, Makoto, Ami, Nephrite, Yaten, Rei
Exquisite: Chloe, Elizabeth, Kanda, Minako, Rima, Fai, Yuuki (HELLO DESIGNER), Joruk, Tidus, Kaname, Massie, Aidou
Terrible: Lenalee, Naoto, Oz (Boy shorts), Terra, Undertaker, Hermes, Naru, Washu, Hermoine, Cheza. Eagle, Ventus, Dante, Saleh
The Most Underrated Outfits (They should have ranked higher in the awards): Yu Kanda, Minako Aino, Sae (Yes to the dress, no to the color combo), Fai, Yuuki, Joruk
Ugliest Dresses: Hermoine, Washu, and Cheza
Worst Suits: Terra and Hermes
That's all we have for you today, isn't it Bean? [Bean looked up, wagged her tail and gave a light yip before Massie said her goodbyes and shut off the feed]
[With a half smile, Massie allowed the camera to pan back revealing her “studio”. Bean, her little black pug, was situated on top of a silk pillow, sporting a jeweled collar. I thought Hermione looked really hot. And Terra's suited his personality. I'm not sure how you can be rugged and frumpy, but I'm not the fashion expert and I don't want to be. Not everyone has to go all-out, especially for what was meant to be a birthday party, even if it was a dressed up one. In fact, most people look better when they don't try to stand out. I'm guessing you were judging everything based on your own world's standards of fashion, but it's hard to expect everyone to follow the same fashion rules or whatever you call them. [This whole thing was just bordering on ridiculous, in his mind.]
Next time, I'm going in nothing but a pair of swimming trunks, but thanks for the compliment and everything.
Only if the dress was flammable and you lit a match would it ever be hot. [She snidely corrected him] Believe me, I don't really want to know what's going on between you and Terra but leave the critiques to me.
