[The heartless have been getting to quite a few people lately. It's hard to tell at first whether Ami is one of them. She's inside, seated at a small table and playing chess against herself. Masters of the game would note the arrangement of the board as a very famous end game maneuver. She's testing it again, noting its weaknesses and the ways to defend against it.

It's keeping her mind off the shadows, and the things that always seem to not-quite-be-there when she looks. It's keeping her mind off the doubts, the worries, the insecurities. But there's very little of her usual gentle smile despite the seeming calm. She has a perhaps not-so-incongruous question.]

What are the things you do to relax and unwind your mind?

It's alright to appreciate both, I think.

[Not when the detectives don't appreciate woman so much...or her in general. At least she managed to overcome that.]

I appreciate the police force we have here and the ones in story books. After all they are places that are accepting, but there have been police forces that would usually look down on someone such as myself for example.

They shouldn't. If you're willing to help and put your mind to work, it's a bit cruel of them to reject that.

I believe it because of my age. They would always look down, but honestly, as long as I was working on the case, solving it. That's all I wanted.

I understand. I'm studying to become a doctor; but no matter what I do right now, because I'm still young, there isn't a hospital that would hire me on its staff.

I see, it wouldn't be until medical school that one could actually practise and gain experience, correct?.

That's also true. So for now, there's nothing to do but study hard and prepare for the day when I'll be ready.

Right. I believe you could do well, even though it will take a long time.

But somewhere like this... Do you think that chance will still come some day?

I'm sure that there are worlds out there who would need a doctor, just like some need a police force. So I assure you someday it will come when your experienced and ready.

I wonder if we'll really be here that long. [But it doesn't seem as though anything is saving them from it, either.]

I don't know, while it seems like a lot of people want it done sooner, the less likely it is to happen.

It may even not happen at all.

From what I've heard a world has come out of the darkness, correct? If that is the case then it's going to happen, it just takes time.

We may not have that time. The Darkness isn't sitting and waiting for us.

But aren't there people fighting at as we speak?

People are all doing there parts to ensure that the Darkness doesn't go further. I'm not saying it's waiting, but I'm also not saying it's going to take everything.

At the rate it spreads, it might be futile to think otherwise.

[She sighs, this just reminds her of the shadows, they play off the most insecure part of a person and show it off towards the world, that's what the darkness reminds her off.]

The reason is spreads is because people let it. It's like something I learnt, the more you reject something, the stronger something will get.

It's like saying 'don't think about a pink elephant'. The first thing in your mind is likely to be exactly that.

So, thinking about your flaws is something one automatically does. But by rejecting them, the darkness has a easier grasp.

The darkness keeps growing, despite whatever we've done so far.

Because people accept it as an inevitability.

Or do they accept it because it's inevitable after all?
